Kernel Panic - GPU is not found. PCI config access fails.

About: Macbook Pro 15inch, 2018. Apple T2 Security Chip, Intel UHD Graphics 630 (built-in), Radeon Pro 560X (PCIe). Built-in retina LCD display. New logic board installed in May, 2024.

Problem: Often after sleep, the screen stays black when trying to switch on. I have to shut down the system by pressing the power button for 10sec and restart (often using SMC reset). The latest panic report is here: Pastebin. I contacted Apple Support and they did a clean install of the latest OS. They ran all hardware diagnostics and reported no problem. Within a day, it happened again. This happens only when waking from sleep mode.

For now, I am not allowing the laptop to go to sleep to avoid this problem.

What should be the next step in the diagnostic process? I am suspecting the battery or PSU might be the problem and not supplying enough power to the GPU. Battery health information shows cycle count is 581, and Condition is "Service Recommended."

That does look like the CPU is failing to power up after sleep. The typical solution for that problem is a mainboard replacement.

If it ONLY happens after sleep, you could work-around that problem, as you are already doing, and keep using your Mac.

The theory that the battery is not supplying enough power is not likely. If not enough power, NOTHING would work.

My conclusions:

• if you replace the battery, then battery run time will get better. In the US, the cost before. tariffs was around US$250.

BUT: you still might be left with the festering GPU not powering up issues. It is possible that could spread into normal operation, leaving you with a Mac with a great battery, but a marginally-operable Mac that needs a mainboard replacement, possibly another US$1000 (guess).

US $1250 is Most of the cost of a new MacBook Air with 16 GB of RAM or more. Perfectly find for most ordinary purposes, and more compute power than your current MacBook Pro.

(if you edit videos often, you might be better served by a MacBook Pro.)

I agree with @Grant that it is a waste of money to spend any money on repairs to this 2018 laptop for multiple reasons. It definitely is not even worth replacing the battery due to those Logic Board issues with the GPU Kernel Panics. The money spent on repairs is much better put towards a new laptop.

I do hope that you have frequent & regular backups of your computer. If not, then that should be your first priority.
