You can check you have enough iCloud storage space for all the files you wanted to sync

If you find such a folder exists: Check to see if the missing documents are in it
Look for an "iCloud Archive" folder on your Mac Harddrive: Look in Users > [your name]
If the files have been accidentally deleted, you may be able to recover them on https://www.icloud.com:

You may want to check your version of MacOS ...
ie: keeping MacOS updated to the newest compatible MacOS often sidesteps various issues
If still using MacOS 11.6 there have been many updates in MacOS 11 since then, and for many of them, this archived article: What's new in the updates for macOS Big Sur - Apple Support says: "This update is recommended for all users and improves the security of macOS." Latest version listed is: macOS Big Sur 11.7.10 (NB: If you choose to update, or upgrade, the Mac OS: it is always wise to back-up your Mac first)
