Gradient Object Rendering Issue in Acrobat when exporting PDF from Keynote

Rendering Issues in Adobe Acrobat with PDFs Exported from Keynote

Hello,

I'm reaching out to report a rendering issue we've encountered when exporting PDFs from Apple Keynote.

The problem occurs when vector objects with gradients—originally created in Adobe Illustrator—are copied into Keynote and then exported as PDFs. When these PDFs are opened in Adobe Acrobat (both Reader and Pro), we observe the following issues:

  • Gradient-filled vector elements fail to render properly—some appear incomplete or are entirely missing.
  • Flashing or flickering of large embedded images during zooming or panning in Acrobat.

It’s important to note that these issues do not occur in macOS Preview or other PDF viewers, which suggests the problem is specific to Adobe Acrobat’s rendering engine.

Given how widely Keynote is used in the creative community—especially in workflows involving Illustrator—we had expected more consistent compatibility across platforms. We hope this issue can be investigated, as it affects presentation quality and client-facing deliverables.

If anyone has experienced similar issues or has found workarounds, your insights would be greatly appreciated. We also hope the Apple team can take this into consideration for future updates.

Thank you!

No Apple employees participate in these fellow-user supported public communities. If you want the Keynote product team to directly know about what you posted here, you need to use the Feedback menu item in the Keynote application.

The other issue is that the Apple PDF Context involved in the Keynote export process is not as current as the PDF support in Adobe products and at best, your Keynote export will be PDF v1.4. Vector gradients may use seven different shading patterns in the PDF with PDF v1.3 and later. With gradients, there is also transparency involved and that is only supported after PDF v1.4. Again, it all depends on what Apple has implemented in their aging PDF support.

An alternative is to try a Keynote Print… > PDF > Save as Adobe PDF that uses Acrobat Pro instead of Apple's PDF code and then compare the vector content in that resulting PDF.
